Dentistry Journal · December 2023 · Randomized controlled clinical study
What was tested
A fluoride dentifrice containing a micro-fibrillated cellulose network with entangled microcrystalline cellulose and silica particles (Protegera™ — the technology inside ENAMÜR) was compared against Crest Cavity Protection as a control. The study enrolled 82 healthy adults and measured plaque after an initial supervised brushing and again after one week of twice-daily home use.
Key findings
- Whole-mouth plaque reduction: 38.6% on first use, 30.9% at day 7, and 41.6% from day 1 to day 7 — versus 12.0%, 9.6% and 11.6% for the control.
- Lingual (tongue-side) plaque: reductions of 27.7%, 22.3% and 31.0% versus 4.4%, 2.2% and 4.5% for the control.
- Safety: no adverse changes to oral soft tissues and no safety concerns emerged.
Conclusion
The researchers concluded that including micro-fibrillated cellulose enhances plaque-removal effectiveness without causing adverse changes to oral soft tissues. In plain terms: the plant fiber network makes normal brushing three to four times more effective at removing plaque.
Why it matters
Most toothpaste doesn't remove more plaque than brushing with water alone. This study tested the finished formula — not just an ingredient — in a randomized, controlled setting, which is the standard of evidence ENAMÜR holds itself to.
