Desvarieux et al. · Stroke · September 2003
Among 711 adults with no prior stroke or heart attack, those with more severe periodontal disease and tooth loss had significantly higher rates of carotid artery plaque — establishing tooth loss as a measurable marker of past periodontal disease and a potential pathway to cardiovascular events.
Why it matters
Periodontal disease is cumulative, and it starts with everyday plaque that isn't fully removed. A toothpaste that makes each brush meaningfully more effective at removing plaque is a small daily habit with a long-term payoff.
