Does dentifrice use help to remove plaque? A systematic review

Valkenburg et al. · Journal of Clinical Periodontology · December 2016

This systematic review examined whether using a dentifrice (toothpaste) actually helps remove more plaque than brushing alone. The conclusion: conventional toothpaste adds no significant plaque-removal benefit over brushing with water. Plaque removal comes from the mechanical action of the brush — most pastes contribute fluoride and flavor, not extra cleaning.

Why it matters

This is the starting point for ENAMÜR. If regular toothpaste doesn't remove more plaque than your brush and water, the opportunity is to make the brush itself more effective. ENAMÜR's plant fiber network grips plaque so normal brushing lifts up to 7X more of it — a result demonstrated in a randomized clinical study of the finished product.
